Frequently asked questions

What is Umfug?

Umfug is an AI chat app with one difference: it pays the creatives it draws on. Whenever a conversation leans on a real writer, musician, or artist, Umfug records it — and a share of our profit goes to the people named, every month.

How does Umfug pay creatives?

Every month, 15% of Umfug's profit goes into a creative pool, split across every creative named in a conversation that month — weighted so emerging artists get a heavier share. A further 5% of profit goes to a clean-water charity.

How do you decide who gets paid, and how much?

After each conversation, Umfug looks at whether the reply genuinely drew on a real, identifiable creative. Each one named mints a token. At month's end everyone's tokens are weighted and the pool is split by a fixed formula — no human picks favourites, and the maths is published in our public ledger.

Where does the money come from?

Your subscription. Umfug is a paid product with no ads and no data-selling. After running costs, 15% of what's left goes to creatives and 5% to clean water — so the more people chat, the bigger the pool.

What's the clean-water part?

5% of monthly profit goes to a clean-water charity. [TODO: name the charity once confirmed.] It runs as a separate counter alongside the creative pool.

How much does Umfug cost?

Umfug is £15/month — see pricing for what's included.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — you can try Umfug without a card for your first handful of messages. After that you'll be asked to subscribe to keep going.

I'm a writer, musician, or artist. How do I get paid?

When you're named in conversations, tokens are minted and your share is held until you claim it. Head to get verified to confirm it's really you and set up payouts.

Can Umfug edit images?

Yes — upload an image and tell it what to change, and it'll edit it for you. It can also answer questions about images you share.

Is my chat private?

Your conversations are yours. We don't sell your data or show ads against it. See our privacy policy for what we store and how to delete it.

What does "Umfug" mean?

It's a German word for mischief — harmless nonsense. The fuller gloss, from our own small print: umfug · noun · gentle nonsense, with intent.
